Some business owners wonder whether it's
really necessary to hire a pension administration firm to
provide annual services for their qualified retirement plan.
Perhaps you may feel that your accountant (or other advisor)
or even your own company would be capable of handling your
plan's administration tasks. While it may seem like a fairly
simple process, in reality, the administration of a qualified
retirement plan is a complex procedure, which requires the
type of technical expertise that WSA provides its clients.
Here are a few questions, which must be addressed to effectively
administer a qualified retirement plan. Which can you answer?
- Does my plan meet the current coverage and non discrimination
tests?
- Is my plan "top heavy" and does it comply with
all of the top-heavy requirements?
- Is my company a member of a "controlled group"?
- What special rules govern such groups?
- Are benefits under my plan in excess of the legal limits?
- How are these limits computed?
- Do current participant loans comply with existing rules?
- What paperwork is necessary to initiate a loan from the
plan?
- If my plan is a 401(k) plan, does it pass the ADP and
ACP non-discrimination tests?
- What information does the law require that I provide to
all participants annually?
- When plan participants retire or terminate employment,
when are they entitled to a distribution?
- Am I familiar with the withholding rules?
- Does my plan contain joint and survivor annuity rules
and what must I do to comply?
- Do I know how to compute the maximum deductible contribution
to my company's plan?
- What if I have more than one plan?
Even if you do know the answers to these questions what
will you do when Congress or the IRS decides to change the
rules? Where will you go for answers and will they be right?
